Believing you can is Important

According to society I have been an adult for years now. Having CP makes being an adult more complicated. In 2022, my immediate family and my life got turned upside down. I knew quickly that I would have to push the boundaries of what I thought was possible with CP for me to help my family. Running errands alone became my new normal. It still is because my family and I had to deal with more changes this year. Those changes are not mine to discuss with the entire world.

Those changes pushed me to stand in my adult shoes further. Being more an adult brought up fears. The inadequacy I was feeling fed those fears. What do I do about it, you ask? I do my best to take it one day at a time. I know that sounds trite, but it is true. Teaching my body to work with me rather than against me is a daily challenge. Learning new skills that most of you take for granted makes me feel accomplished. I don’t feel comfortable sharing exactly what those new skills are with all of you. I can tell you that I am much more capable than I thought. The idea that I am not capable was only in my head. That thought was reinforced by people when I go outside my apartment because they automatically see me as not capable before I prove them wrong. That is a drawback of having CP people making assumptions before they even get to see you as you are.

I shared this with all of you to tell you that you are as capable as you want to be. I know that that is easier said than done but hear me out. What if what we think we are not capable of really is all in our head? What if we just try to do the things, we think we cannot? From my experience by just trying, we are doing better than most people because most people are afraid to try. Society tells us that failure is bad. I am here to tell you that failure is often the best teacher because we have to learn to do things other ways. When you try to do the things, you think you cannot I feel positive you are going to surprise yourself with what you can do. So, the next time you think you cannot do something just try and you can most likely.
